Count Louis van Gaal among the most shocked (and perhaps only) people shocked by his firing from Manchester United this morning.
According to Sun Sport, Van Gaal is ‘furious’ after his sacking by Man United vice-chairman Ed Woodward earlier today. Per the source, the Dutch boss already began planning for the 2016-17 season following his triumphant FA Cup win this past weekend.
Unfortunately for the former Netherlands’ manager, his weekend success was not enough to save his job.
Van Gaal’s 2-1 FA Cup win over Crystal Palace on Saturday capped an otherwise disappointing spell as manager. In two seasons and 103 games as manager he won just 52.43% of his games – a lower win rate than his predecessor David Moyes.
After winning no silverware in the 2014-15 season, Man United finished fourth on the table and secured a Champions League spot for the following year. But they were knocked out in the group stage after taking just one point from their three road matches.
Man United would miss out on the Champions League for the second time in three years after losing vital games to the likes of Sunderland, AFC Bournemouth, Norwich City and Swansea City. They finished fifth in the Premier League that season.
Goals became exceptionally hard to come by under Louis van Gaal. Ten times the Red Devils were held scoreless in Premier League games and three times in other competitions.
His tenure was marred by nearly a quarter-billion pounds wasted on flop transfers such as Angel Di Maria, Memphis Depay, Marcos Rojo, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin.
