Manchester United 0-0 Chelsea video & report: Van Gaal’s men impress but can’t find breakthrough

Manchester United were held to a goalless draw by Chelsea at Old Trafford on Monday evening, but Louis van Gaal will be pleased with the performance from his players.

The Dutch tactician was under immense pressure heading into the encounter after four consecutive defeats in all competitions, but the hosts were unfortunate not to secure all three points even though Nemanja Matic missed a glorious opportunity in the second half to pile further misery on them.

Chelsea remained content throughout to sit back and try to hit their rivals on the counter attack, but that undoubtedly gave United confidence as the game went on as they continued to push forward in search of a decisive win.

While Anthony Martial went close with an effort that struck the post, the hosts continued to enjoy the better of the chances with Wayne Rooney going close late on as they set the tone immediately with Juan Mata rattling the crossbar two minutes into the contest.

However they were unable to find a breakthrough, and with speculation that Van Gaal was set for the axe regardless of the result, as suggested by The Telegraph, it remains to be seen whether or not the Dutchman has taken charge of his final game at Old Trafford.

If that turns out to be the case, then he will have been pleased with the reaction from his players against the Premier League champions, as United showed determination and attacking intent that had been lacking from their performances for some time.

Nevertheless, they had David De Gea to thank for this double save in the second half, as Chelsea did threaten to add to United’s woes with Matic guilty of missing the chance of the game after the visitors had countered superbly from a United corner.

With neither side able to find a way to break the deadlock, both were forced to settle for a share of the spoils which may not be enough to ensure that Van Gaal remains at the helm in Manchester as time will tell if he will still be in charge in 2016.
