The Manchester derby is always entertaining – on and off the pitch – between the history, the iconic moments and of course the trash-talking. After Man United’s 1-0 win over Man City several weeks ago, midfielder Ander Herrera now believes that the Red Devils have once again asserted dominance over their cross-town rivals.
In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Herrera remained confident that Man United can secure a Champions League berth even though they are currently behind Man City for the final spot on the table.
‘Man United should be every year in the Champions League,’ Herrera said told Sky Sports.
‘I think the last 25 or 26 years, just one time we didn’t play Champions League so we want to be there.
‘We are Man United, we as players are obligated to fight until the end and I think we have the quality to be there.
Herrera said that the return of several players from various injuries will help them make the final push and that the Red Devils can afford to be optimistic after beating Man City in the derby last month.
‘We have recovered some important players for us. They are going to help us and there is a lot of experience, like Antonio [Valencia] and Ash [Young]. I am optimistic.
‘I think the last game we showed that we are a little bit better than them right now, in this moment.
‘We beat them away in the Manchester derby so we can be optimistic.’
Say what you will about Man City failing to reach expectations though, it hasn’t stopped them from winning the League Cup and going farther into the Champions League than any other Premier League team this year. Kevin De Bruyne’s return in last week’s 4-0 win over Bournemouth also served as a display of their scoring brilliance.
