It did not take long for Man United to suffer a serious case of buyer’s remorse after they signed Memphis Depay for over £20 million this past summer. Considering his rather minimal contributions to the team’s success in the down season, Depay has been viewed by many as inconsistent at best and a flop at worst. However, with signs of improvement over the last few weeks, Man United may actually find themselves paying even more to Depay’s former club.
According to the Daily Mirror, Football Leaks revealed that Depay could end up costing Man United up to £34 million if he plays well for the team. Apparently, in addition to the £26.7 million fees that the Red Devils paid (and continue to pay) to Depay’s former club PSV Eindhoven, they will be on the hook for even more money if the Dutch star contributes to their Champions League success.
Per the source, significant bonuses would be owed to the Eredivisie giants depending on how far they get into the tournament with Depay on the team.
Depay has five goals and no assists in 37 appearances for Man United this season.
