Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is 31 years old and certainly not in his athletic prime anymore, but after enduring criticism from Red Devils fans over his lack of speed, the German superstar explained that he’s never going to be the fastest guy on the field.
In an interview with a German magazine [per The Sun], Schweinsteiger spoke out against the unfair criticism he received, stating that he’s playing the same level of football that helped Germany win the 2014 World Cup. He added that his version of “old man football” has worked and that he’ll never be Usain Bolt.
“I am currently playing on a level that is comparable to that during the World Cup [in] 2014,” Schweinsteiger said.
“’Old man’s football’ – that is an expression that was used back then, too. After the World Cup final those voices went silent.
“I will never be able to compete with Usain Bolt.”
Man United acquired Schweinsteiger in a transfer from Bayern Munich this past summer. Schweinsteiger had previously won the Bundesliga title under Louis van Gaal when the Man United boss was manager of the German giants from 2009 to 2011.
Schweinsteiger has been one of Man United’s best passers this season and recorded his first goal for the club a few weeks ago in a 1-1 draw against Leicester City.
