Ilkay Gundogan has already been ruled out of representing Germany in the Euro 2016 after disclocating his kneecap – an injury that will require serious surgery in order to remedy. However, the impending recovery time will not prevent incoming Man City manager Pep Guardiola from bringing the Borussia Dortmund superstar to the Etihad with him.
According to the Daily Mail, Guardiola remains undaunted in his pursuit of the 25-year-old midfielder and still sees him as a top transfer target for the Citizens despite having an unknown timetable on Gundogan’s return.
Gundogan would likely serve as a replacement for Yaya Toure, who is expected to leave Man City in the summer.
Various injuries have hampered Gundogan over the last few years. He missed all but three games in the 2013-14 season after a serious back injury.
Gundogan played in 40 games for Dortmund this season, his most since a 45-game campaign in the 2012-13 season that preceded a Champions League Final loss to Bayern Munich. He received a contract extension through 2017 early in the 2015-16 season.
