“Getting closer” – Newcastle given hope in Marc Guehi transfer saga

Newcastle United are edging closer to signing Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi.

The Magpies have been locked in talks with the Eagles for several weeks and have already seen four bids for the England international rejected with the latest thought to be worth £65 million (including add-ons).

Newcastle continuing talks to sign Marc Guehi

Despite being knocked back, Newcastle remain determined to sign the 24-year-old though, and according to Sky Sports News, are finally closing in on reaching an agreement.

“It feels as though their move, their protracted move, for Marc Guehi is getting closer,” reporter Keith Downie said.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is wanted by Newcastle United.

“I understand talks continued between the two clubs yesterday as they attempt to find a resolution to what has really become a standoff between Crystal Palace and Newcastle.”

Joachim Andersen to Fulham doesn’t change anything

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace recently reached an agreement with Fulham to sell Joachim Andersen in a deal worth £30 million, as per Fabrizio Romano.

And although many suspect Palace’s decision to let Andersen go would end any chance Newcastle had of signing Guehi, Downie believes the Eagles could sell both centre-backs in the same window.

“That is not how I understand it,” he added.

“I am of the belief there is a chance both players could be sold in the next week with Crystal Palace lining up alternatives.”

For Guehi, although Newcastle doesn’t represent a major step up in quality, with the Magpies’ new ownership the wealthiest in the league, the future at St. James’ Park is bright, and an opportunity to overtake Alexander Isak and become the side’s most expensive-ever signing, may be too good to turn down.
