Liverpool set to move for 22-year-old following Fabrizio Romano transfer hint

Liverpool are reportedly set to make their move for Sporting Lisbon centre-back Goncalo Inacio as talks are expected with the player’s agent.

The talented young Portugal international has long been linked with a host of top clubs, and the latest is that Liverpool are now looking likely to step up their efforts to bring the 22-year-old to Anfield, according to the print edition of Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, as cited and translated by Sport Witness.

It will be interesting to see how this develops, and it’s worth noting that this story comes just as Fabrizio Romano spoke exclusively to CaughtOffside for his Daily Briefing column about Liverpool’s plans in defence.

Romano suggested the Reds were working behind the scenes but wouldn’t just spend for the sake of it, so it could be that they’re now focusing on Inacio as their priority in that area of the pitch.

Goncalo Inacio to Liverpool?

Although Romano didn’t mention Inacio specifically, he spoke today about Liverpool’s quiet summer and what we could expect from them before the window closes.

“It was widely reported earlier in the summer that a young defender would also be on the agenda for Liverpool, but so far we haven’t seen anyone come in,” Romano said.

“What I can say is that Liverpool are still exploring several options on the market – they will just not sign for the sake of it, but if they find right opportunity. They keep working on ideas and options, for sure.”

LFC fans will be frustrated at a lack of new arrivals, with new manager Arne Slot surely needing to be given plenty of resources as he takes on the difficult job of replacing the legendary Jurgen Klopp.

Inacio would surely be ideal for Liverpool right now as Virgil van Dijk isn’t getting any younger, with the Sporting CB perhaps an ideal long-term successor in that role.
