Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is nearing the end of his contract at the club and the Reds are plotting extension talks with the player towards the end of the year.

Van Dijk will be a free agent next summer and Liverpool cannot afford to lose a player of his quality on a free transfer. It will be interesting to see if they can convince the Dutch international defender to sign a new deal with the club.

The Liverpool captain has been an exceptional performer for the club since joining them from Southampton and Liverpool must do everything in their power to keep him at the club beyond this season.

He is one of the best defenders in the world and Liverpool will need his quality and experience if they want to win major trophies. The defender will probably look to gauge the ambition of the club by the transfer business this summer before committing his long-term future to them.

Liverpool are yet to improve their first-team squad and it remains to be seen whether they can bring in the right additions and convince their best players to stay.

Van Dijk set for Liverpool contract talks

According to Football Insider, Liverpool will hold formal talks with the defender towards the end of the year and the Reds will certainly hope that Van Dijk is impressed with the direction the club is heading in by then.

Liverpool have a new manager in charge and Arne Slot will be expected to help Liverpool push for major trophies in the upcoming campaign. It remains to be seen whether the Dutch manager can impress the players with his philosophy and convince senior stars like Van Dijk to sign a new deal.

Despite being 33, he remains a world-class performer and Liverpool must convince him to stay.
