Liverpool sources respond to transfer links with PL star as possible Zubimendi alternative

Liverpool FC sources have apparently ruled out trying a move to sign Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes as an alternative to Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi.

Although the Reds could surely do well to try for someone like Guimaraes to give them an upgrade in midfield, it seems there is currently no interest in doing so, according to anonymous club sources cited by The Athletic.

Guimaraes has been a key player during his time at St James’ Park and one imagines Magpies fans will be relieved that it now seems likely he’s going to end up staying at the club this summer despite so much speculation over his future.

The Brazil international looks like someone who’d be good enough to be play at the very highest level, so it’s some feat for Newcastle to keep him now that they’re out of the Champions League for the season ahead.

Guimaraes transfer not on Liverpool’s agenda, but what about Anthony Gordon?

The Athletic also provided some further insight into the Anthony Gordon situation after Liverpool agreed a deal for the Newcastle winger earlier in the summer.

NUFC ended up pulling out of that agreement, and it seems they are not feeling the pressure to let the England international go now due to eased Financial Fair Play pressure.

Liverpool’s interest in Gordon remains, according to the report, but this perhaps looks unlikely for the moment, while Guimaraes also clearly doesn’t seem to be on the cards.

Zubimendi could have been another fine signing for LFC in that area of the pitch, but we’ll have to see who they end up going for as an alternative, or if they even push for another midfielder at all after four new signings already came in in that position last summer in the form of Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Wataru Endo.
