Lopetegui could walk as West Ham struggling to land transfer targets

Posted by

It looks as if lightning could be striking twice for new West Ham first-team coach, Julen Lopetegui.

The Spaniard quickly parted ways with Wolverhampton Wanderers once the club admitted that they wouldn’t be able to afford to land the targets Lopetegui had in mind, per The Athletic (subscription required).

Taking over at the London Stadium promised a new dawn in East London, but it seems as if things are quickly turning sour.

West Ham not backing Lopetegui in the transfer market

The club have already had bids rejected for Wolves captain, Max Kilman, and Nice’s brilliant former Barcelona centre-back, Jean-Clair Todibo.

Though the Daily Mail suggest that the club are considering a second bid for Todibo, the low-balling antics of chairman, David Sullivan, threatens to sever the relationship with Lopetegui before it starts.

If the Hammers do genuinely want to be considered as regular participants in European competition, and their aspiration remains to be in the Champions League, then the hierarchy need to start thinking and working as an elite club.

West Ham United manager Julen Lopetegui

With a fanatical supporter base that follow the club through thick and thin, the East London outfit have everything in place to be successful but almost always fall short – due in no small part to a small-minded attitude that belies their apparent intentions.

As Lopetegui has shown previously, if he feels short-changed at any point he isn’t going to hang about, so West Ham need to think very carefully about their next moves.

Tim Steidten has shown his astuteness in the transfer market so also needs to be backed by Sullivan and his board.

This is a real crossroads for the club now. Make the right decisions and West Ham will continue on an upward trajectory.

Decide to keep saving the pennies and they’ll only continue to stagnate.

  1. You’re kidding right? The new manager has been in post four days and you write this nonsense? Goodness me……

    1. You do know Lopetegui’s history right…? And more importantly West Ham’s under David Sullivan. Let’s revisit this conversation at some point soon.

  2. I said 3 weeks ago gsbk have no intentions of spending money we wil be worse off than last season and managerless gsbk and rest of board out

    1. The Club will never achieve greatness with that Odious Little Spiv Dwarf Gobshite Sullivan in charge.

  3. I could see this happening from the start. Sullivan is a Scrooge we all know this.. he’s an embarrassment to our famous Club.. time for him to pack his bag a clear off.. B4 Lopetegui walks 😡

  4. It’s the same old story Sullivan makes promises that he has no intention of keeping he tells us and stiedten along with lopetegui that we will be busy in the transfer market and target quality players to help take us back to Europe but when it comes to parting with money to achieve that goal Sullivan won’t cough up he wants everything on the cheap the sooner the club changes hands the better because while Sullivan is in charge things will never get better and could end up costing the club its premiership status

  5. When the transfer window comes around I find myself permanently embarrassed as a Hammers fan. Sullivan has probably no better than 10% success rate when targeting players and other clubs must view us with a high degree of cynicism. The manager will leave as will our top players and we will be going down. Time for Sullivan to move on.

  6. Same old rubbish it’s true what everyone is saying he sullivan promises everything and gives nothing i think the manager will be gone by the end of July if things don’t improve on the transfer market very soon

  7. What an absolute load of rubbish !! Lazy journalism because you have nothing better to write.
There is nothing to substantiate your claims or story.
Drives me mad when people write this crap when they are not in the know.
Bore off and write about another club !!!

  8. If Lopetegui was to walk out of another club then he would never be employed by anyone ever. again. That should be obvious to anybody.

  9. Total and utter made up rubbisn. Transfer window has only been open for 3 full days. Time to blacklist your publications

  10. What is with this Tim Steidten. I thought he had all these transfers sorted out. What has he been doing. The geezer seems like a waste of money. I could do his job, going after this one and that one, offering stupid money only to have bids rejected.
If JL leaves, who can blame him. The clubs a circus run by clowns and has been for years.

  11. Poor recruitment is the reason we are in this position. So many people we have been linked with went elsewhere because we were not prepared to stump up the offers. We procrastinate, delay, try to extract the best possible deal and then provide lame excuses for not following through on targets. Other clubs must laugh when they find they are only competing with West Ham for a signature.

  12. Wow, what a load of drivel. I’m not sure which is worse, the original article or the unfounded responses from the anti Sullivan brigade.
More and more, especially having to comply with the PSR, football success mirrors a club’s position in the financial hierarchy. Based on our income we have more than held our own when it comes to investment in the team.
Last season alone our additions included Mavropanos, Ward-Prowse, Kudus and Alvarez. All full internationals that commanded decent fees. Posters may not like Sullivan but repeating ‘myths’ does their argument no good at all.
Now I am mad at myself! How did I even get drawn in to replying to such nonsense? Does Mr. Pettigrove earn a living from this? Amazing! Many an educated and knowledgeable football journalist from bygone years will be turning in their graves.

  13. Sullivan and kretinsky need to back Lopetegui and steinden with serious money! They have to rebuild west ham after Moyes left the first team squad in a mess.Moyes was Sullivans managerial pick so he should back the new manager and steinden. We must buy good improving young players under 26 ideally.Because going forward they will hopefully have a good resale value. The football club needs to be run efficiently from top to bottom from now on to achieve champions league qualification in the next three seasons.COYI

    1. Regardless of how efficiently the club is run, until we acquire a ‘Top 4’ income we will not be regularly competing for Champions League football.
Have a look at the ‘salaries paid’ league table for last year. It copies across almost line by line to the Premier League finishing positions. The higher the income, the more you can spend on transfers and wages, the higher you finish in the Premier League. Sadly, it’s modern football.
