Sheffield United have ended a dismal Premier League campaign with just 16 points and a record-equalling low goal difference.

Chris Wilder’s men lost 3-0 at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday thanks to a stunning strike by Pedro Porro and two goals from Dejan Kulusevski.

That result saw the Yorkshire club finish the season with a goal difference of minus-69, which ties the record set by Derby County in 2007/08.

The Blades conceded 104 goals this season – which is a Premier League record – and only scored 35 at the other end.

Worst goal differences in Premier League history

  • -69 goal difference by Derby County in 2007/08
  • -69 goal difference by Sheffield United in 2023/24
  • -61 goal difference by Norwich City in 2021/22

  • -54 goal difference by Huddersfield Town in 2018/19
  • -53 goal difference by Swindon Town in 1993/94

Despite tying Derby’s dreadful goal-difference record, Sheffield United are not the worst team in Premier League history based on points won.

That title still belongs to Derby, who went down with just 11 points in 2008.

Lowest final points totals in Premier League history

  • 15 points by Sunderland in 2005/06
  • 16 points by Sheffield United in 2023/24

Tottenham’s victory on Sunday secured a fifth-place finish, which will see Ange Postecoglou’s side enter next season’s UEFA Europa League in the group stage.

Spurs finished with a goal difference of +13, which was the seventh best in the Premier League this season – behind Manchester City (+62), Arsenal (+62), Liverpool (+45), Newcastle (+23), Aston Villa (+15) and Chelsea (+14).
