Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon says he was always focused on England and that changing his national team to Scotland was “never a thought.”

For the next Wembley friendly doubleheader against Brazil and Belgium, the 23-year-old has received his first senior call-up.

Should he make it into Gareth Southgate’s side in time for Euro 2024, this may be his big break.

Gordon was awarded player of the tournament and assisted England in winning the 2023 European Under-21 Championship.

Anthony Gordon could have played for Scotland

Due to his heritage, he is still available for the Republic of Ireland and Scotland, the latter of which may be able to use him to break into the senior international scene and earn a berth at the Euros this summer.

However, that chance now comes with England, and it was the only result the former Everton winger was hoping for.

“It was never a thought for me,” he said when asked if he had considered it, as quoted by The Herald.

“That’s no disrespect to Scotland, that’s all. I’ve been tunnel-visioned on playing for England since I was five or six years old. Nothing could ever shake that off.

“I could never forgive myself if I hadn’t got to this point. Like I said, it is just a dream I’ve had from so young so nothing else has ever entered my mind at any time.”

Scottish FA have their sights set on other English talent besides Gordon. His teammates Elliot Anderson, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento can all play for Scotland.

Anthony Gordon is determined for success with England

Gordon acknowledges that hearing Southgate discuss how close he had come to selecting the Newcastle player in earlier selections gave him more impetus to take the jump to senior football in his stride.

Gordon believes success with the Under-21s can help him achieve success with the senior side.

The 23-year-old is enjoying a successful individual season at St. James’ Park, having scored nine goals and provided five assists in 27 Premier League games.
