Despite turning 40 later this year, Jose Fonte remains a top European defender.

The centre-back has enjoyed a long career and has played for some of the sports’ biggest clubs, both at home and abroad. He was also part of Portugal’s European Championship-winning squad in 2016.

And once part of West Ham’s squad, Fonte, 39, who left the country’s capital in favour of a move to China in 2018, has broken his silence on his decision to leave the Premier League.

“It was of course a financial choice,” the defender, now at Lille told L’Equipe.

“I was at West Ham and just came back after four months with an ankle injury.

“I was ready but I wasn’t playing. I wasn’t convinced with David Moyes’ answers. He said to me: ‘If you leave I’d understand’. At 34 it was a very good opportunity.”
