Chelsea summer signing Jorginho broke a record for the club in terms of passes completed in total in today’s win over Newcastle.
The Blues ran out 2-1 victors at St James’ Park, and Jorginho was absolutely masterful with his display in the middle of the park.

As reported by BBC Sport when the Italy international joined, Manchester City actually ended up pulling out of a deal to sign the player while he was still at previous club Napoli, meaning he ended up following manager Maurizio Sarri to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea are now really feeling the benefits of winning that particular transfer battle – but possession football like this will make City and Pep Guardiola wish they’d pushed ahead with the deal!

And while it is of course early days, the summer signing’s fine form means after three games Chelsea are actually two points ahead of the reigning champions already.
According to the Metro, Jorginho completed 158 passes in Chelsea’s win today – more than the whole Newcastle team combined, the most by any player in the Premier League for the west Londoners, and the second highest ever:
This is seriously impressive and makes it clear why City were interested in the 26-year-old in the first place – he would have been absolutely ideal for Guardiola’s style of football at the Etihad Stadium.
We knee-jerkingly suggested Jorginho could be an outsider for PFA Player of the Year this season, and while players like him don’t normally win such awards, he’s made a fantastic start to life at CFC and if he carries on like this you couldn’t rule him out.
