Manchester United in talks to beat Liverpool & Arsenal to £114m duo that would give them BEST attack in Europe

Manchester United are reportedly in talks over two hugely exciting attacking transfers to bolster their squad for next season.

Even though the Red Devils have brought in Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez in the last two transfer windows, it looks as though Jose Mourinho has even more big plans in that department.

Given the way Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have struggled this season – while Sanchez hasn’t really hit the ground running either even if he should improve after a proper pre-season – it is little surprise to see this £114million duo in the manager’s sights.

Speculation is hotting up that Martial in particular looks likely to be on his way out, with a number of top clubs ready to pay somewhere in the region of £60m for the Frenchman this summer.

Anthony Martial is being linked with a transfer away from Manchester United

Elsewhere, Juan Mata’s future is far from certain and of course Henrikh Mkhitaryan left in January and more depth could be useful in a bid to catch up with Manchester City next season.

Read on to find out who Mourinho is working on bringing in…

Dries Mertens (Napoli)

One player who looks Old Trafford-bound is Napoli forward Dries Mertens, according to Sport Witness.

The free-scoring Belgian can operate out wide on either flank or as a striker, but it is at centre-forward that he’s really found his calling in the last couple of seasons.

Dries Mertens would make a superb signing for Manchester United

Mertens, 31, has scored 46 goals over the last two seasons in that new role and his experience and work rate make him the dream Mourinho striker.

With the Portuguese tactician trying Alexis Sanchez and Jesse Lingard up front together against West Ham, could this perhaps be a hint of a two-striker system for next season, but with Mertens and Lukaku leading the line instead?

Thomas Lemar (Monaco)

Next on United’s list is Monaco winger Thomas Lemar, likely to cost the club as much as £90million, according to the Times.

The France international has been superb in Ligue 1 and could be a major upgrade on the inconsistent Martial on that left-hand side, being a more natural wide-player.

Monaco’s Thomas Lemar seems a perfect fit for Manchester United

With pace and quality from his crosses, Lemar would be the ideal fit to get balls into the box for Lukaku next season and help improve United’s productivity in the final third.

Liverpool and Arsenal have also been strongly linked with the talented 22-year-old, but it seems United could have the edge in this transfer battle due to their superior finances.

Even with Martial leaving, could a front four of Lemar, Mertens, Sanchez and Lukaku be the best attack in Europe next season? It’s hard to think of one better on paper, so now Mourinho just has to make sure his own management style doesn’t hold this quartet back from fulfilling its potential.
