Barcelona completed the signing of Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool last month, and he’s reiterated why he wanted the move.
As per BBC Sport, the Catalan giants splashed out £142m to prise the Brazilian playmaker away from Anfield, and he has made a steady if not influential start to life at the Nou Camp so far.
Coutinho was a hugely important figure at Liverpool and had come close to winning trophies with Jurgen Klopp’s side, but ultimately he has suggested that he didn’t feel as though it was possible to win silverware regularly with the Reds and in turn he was keen for the move to Barca.
“Everyone knows that I wanted to come to Barcelona,” he told 8tv’s Fora De Joc, as reported by The Daily Star. “I really want to win big titles, it was one of the reasons that made me sign for the club. I want to win as many as I can, I don’t have preferences.”
He’ll certainly get that opportunity at the Nou Camp, with Barca currently leading the way in La Liga with a nine-point lead over nearest rivals Atletico Madrid.
Further, they remain in the hunt for the Copa del Rey and Champions League, and so in fairness, Coutinho’s made the right decision if that was one of his motivations behind joining the Blaugrana.
Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool will undoubtedly hope to prove that entirely wrong in the coming months and years as they aim to end their wait for silverware, but these comments won’t do much to settle Reds fans still upset that they’ve lost another top player and are seemingly still not close enough to winning things.
