Tottenham want £25m-rated French international to bolster Pochettino options

Tottenham have been linked with a move for Kevin Gameiro in the January transfer window to bolster their attacking options.

Atletico Madrid sit in second place in La Liga, eight points adrift of leaders Barcelona, and they’ve managed to do so despite their two French stars Gameiro and Antoine Griezmann failing to find top form.

The former has six goals and two assists in 18 appearances so far this season, building on 16 goals and seven assists in 46 outings last year which was still slightly short of the level that he displayed for Sevilla previously.

Nevertheless, that hasn’t put off Tottenham from expressing an interest in him this month, as per The Sun, with Swansea City said to have been linked with a £25m swoop for him that he turned down.

Regardless of whether or not he’s hit top form so far this season, there are many positives in taking the 30-year-old to north London before the deadline this month.

Gameiro offers experience at a high level both domestically and in Europe, albeit he’ll be cup-tied in the Champions League having already featured for Atleti in the competition.

With his pace, movement and eye for goal though, he could be the ideal addition to offer a back-up option to Harry Kane who has been handed a huge responsibility to score goals for Tottenham on a regular basis.

He hasn’t done a bad job of it given he’s got 28 goals in 28 games, but in the event he gets injured or loses form, Mauricio Pochettino will surely appreciate the option of having another striker to call upon.

Fernando Llorente has done a job of sort for Tottenham since his arrival last summer, but with just two goals and one assist in 22 appearances, it’s not quite the impact that Spurs need if they want to compete for major honours.
