Liverpool defender charged with common assault after 3.20am incident in city centre

Jon Flanagan was destined for great things at Liverpool

Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan was reportedly arrested last Friday night after an incident in Liverpool city centre at 3.20am, according to BBC News.

The 24-year-old has barely featured for the Reds in recent times, making just one appearance this season and spending last year on loan at Burnley, where he only played six Premier League games.

It’s fair to say things have now gone even further downhill for Flanagan after his charge with common assault following events last week.

The one-cap England international is now due to appear in court on the 2nd of January, though further details are not yet known about what actually took place or how severe a punishment he might face.

A spokesperson said: ‘Merseyside Police can confirm that Jonathan Patrick Flanagan, aged 24, from Cressington in Liverpool has been charged with Section 39 common assault following an incident on Duke Street in Liverpool city centre at around 3.20am on Friday, December 22.’

Meanwhile, a Liverpool FC spokesperson said: ‘The club has been made aware of an alleged incident involving a member of the first team playing squad.

‘We will be making no further comment on the matter while the process is ongoing with the relevant authorities.’

Flanagan was a key player for Liverpool under previous manager Brendan Rodgers, looking one of the country’s most exciting young talents during the 2013/14 season.

However, he has had injury trouble since then and has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield.
