Arsenal may have been dealt a blow to their transfer plans regarding Steven N’Zonzi with news just breaking that Sevilla have sacked manager Eduardo Berizzo.
The Gunners will have their mind on tonight’s game with Liverpool, but this could be a big development in N’Zonzi’s situation after recent links with a transfer to the Emirates Stadium.
According to recent claims by the Sun, Arsenal have been weighing up a swoop for the unsettled Frenchman with a £35million release clause at his current club.
The rumours circulated after N’Zonzi lost his place in the Sevilla team under Berizzo this season, and he’d been quoted as saying he had to leave because of this snub by the manager.
Berizzo also suggested he’d consider the 28-year-old’s future in January, but it may now be that his sacking will hand the player a lifeline and a reason to stay at Sevilla.
‘The coach pointed the finger at me. I will not repeat it … but his words affected me,’ N’Zonzi recently told France Football, translated by the Metro.
‘My future is clearly away from Seville. The only thing that disappoints me is the way it has ended.’
Meanwhile, Berizzo was quoted by Tribal Football last week as saying: ‘It (N’Zonzi’s future) is an issue that we’ll evaluate over the holidays. These things will remain confined to the dressing room. It’s a technical decision.
‘We’ll assess the situation in a consensual way, for the good of the team and the club.’
