The Champions League draw has been made, and it’s fair to say it looks like being a cracking competition this year with some exciting ties for Premier League clubs.
Manchester City are the only English side to get what looks an easy game on paper, having been drawn with Swiss side Basel, and it’s Chelsea’s game against Barcelona that stands out.
There’s no letting up for the others, however, with Tottenham facing a daunting task against Italian champions and last season’s European runners-up Juventus, while Manchester United take on Sevilla and Liverpool must face Porto.
One of the most intriguing ties, however, involves Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, with last season’s winners coming up against one of the most ambitious club sides on the planet.
Having signed Neymar and Kylian Mbappe over the summer, PSG’s aim is very much to see off teams like Real to win this tournament, and that is precisely what they’ll have to do in the last 16.
The Champions League draw in full:
Juventus v Tottenham
Liverpool vs Porto
Basel vs Manchester City
Sevilla vs Manchester United
Real Madrid vs PSG
Chelsea vs Barcelona
Shakhtar Donetsk vs Roma
Besiktas vs Bayern Munich
It’s very hard luck for Chelsea, who in finishing second in their group could only have come up against Barca, PSG or Besiktas.
Tottenham’s reward for winning their group, meanwhile, sees them get a surprisingly tough tie against Juventus, who were one of the best runners-up in the group stages, finishing second only to Barcelona.
While Premier League clubs have looked improved in Europe this season, they’ll do well to go further in the competition now after testing ties in this Champions League draw.
