Liverpool are reportedly targeting a move for Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu as Jurgen Klopp looks to add depth to his defence.
The German tactician has seen both Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure leave the club this summer, while Mamadou Sakho and Joe Gomez are struggling with injuries.
In turn, that leaves him with new signing Joel Matip in pre-season, and he is expected to be partnered by Dejan Lovren. Although Sakho is arguably likely to come straight in when fit, Klopp wants more quality and depth in the central defensive positions.
According to Le Parisien, that has seen him consider a move for Barca defender Mathieu, with the Frenchman understood to be in talks with the Reds as well as with Besiktas regarding a summer move.
However, it is suggested that he prefers a move to the Premier League, and would therefore welcome the possibility of playing at Anfield and providing cover for the Reds both at centre-back and at left-back.
It’s been a busy summer for Klopp thus far, with the former Dortmund boss bringing in the likes of Loris Karius, Matip, Marko Grujic and Sadio Mane, but it doesn’t appear as though he’s finished as of yet.
Given his defensive headaches, a new addition to the backline will be welcomed, but whether or not the idea to add depth and experience over an individual capable of becoming a central figure in his plans is a wise move remains to be seen.
