France beat Iceland 5-2 at the Stade de France in the Euro 2016 quarter-final last night with Olivier Giroud bagging a brace.
The French will take on old rivals Germany next in the semi-final stage of the tournament – the victor will take on the winner of the Wales v Portugal clash.
Giroud revealed that he believes Germany will be favourites against France but that they could still pull off an upset.
The Arsenal striker also stated that France want to get revenge for Germany beating them in the 2014 World Cup.
Germany did of course beat France 1-0 at the quarter-final stage of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
“Confident? No, Germany are the world champions and will be favourites but we want to write another chapter in the history of French football,” Giroud was quoted as saying by the Mirror.
“We have a lot of desire to try and get our own back for what happened in the world cup. We beat them here in a friendly match, winning 2-0, but it will be completely different in Marseille.
Giroud also called on the French fans to show the same kind of support shown against Iceland when they take on Germany.”
“I hope the French public are as excitable in the stadium as they were tonight, and they support us all the way. We play a Euros semi-final in front of a home crowd. I’m proud of what we’re achieving. I hope we come out with the right result once again,” he added.
The French international striker now has three goals and two assists to his name at Euro 2016.
