Jamie Carragher wants Jurgen Klinsmann to take over as England manager

Former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher believes the FA should take a trip across the Atlantic to find the next manager of the Three Lions and hopes USMNT manager Jurgen Klinsmann gets the job.

Penning an Op-Ed for the Daily Mail, Carragher identified Klinsmann as his top choice to take over for Roy Hodgson, who resigned after England’s devastating 2-1 loss to Iceland in the Euro 2016 knockout round. Carragher explained that Klinsmann’s track record is solid from his stints with Germany and the United States, and his understanding of the English game is good as well.

“I wouldn’t knock the idea of appointing Jurgen Klinsmann,” Carragher wrote. “…who has been to a World Cup semi-final with Germany, a Copa America semi-final with the United States and knows our game.”

Carragher added that while he appreciated the eagerness of his former England teammate Alan Shearer to take the job, he does not think Shearer is qualified enough at this time to take on the role due to his failure in a brief spell as manager of Newcastle United in 2009.

“Shearer’s patriotism is admirable but there is more to being a successful manager than just patriotism and emotion. Shearer, after all, will remember how, after acting on emotion when Newcastle called him in 2009, he failed to stop the club he has supported all his life being relegated.”

Klinsmann has had a mixed record with the United States since taking over the team in 2011. He led the country to a CONCACAF Gold Cup title in 2013 and then into the knockout round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. This past summer he led the team to a surprise spot in the Copa America Centenario Semi-Finals, but lost to Argentina and later to Colombia in the third-place playoff.
