Chelsea eye deal for £3m Egyptian goalkeeper

In an effort to find a new goalkeeper, Chelsea appear to be setting their sights on Zamalek SC and Egypt stopper Ahmed El-Shenawy.

According to Goal via The Sun, Chelsea are eyeing a deal for 25-year-old El-Shenawy worth around £3 million.

During the 2014-15 season – his first campaign with Zamalek SC, El-Shenawy helped the club post the best scoring defense in the Egyptian Premier League en route to league title honours and victory in the Egypt Cup.

On the international level, El-Shenawy has been capped 26 times for Egypt and was the No. 2 goalkeeper behind team captain Essam El-Hadary during the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers earlier this month.

El-Shenawy was a member of Egypt’s 2012 Summer Olympics team, a spot he shared with Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny and former Chelsea forward Mohamed Salah.

Incumbent Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois missed multiple games this season due to injuries, making just 23 starts in the Premier League this past season. His backup Asmir Begovic struggled to keep clean sheets, making just seven in 23 starts in all competitions.
