It has been a very difficult year for Raheem Sterling, who endured a difficult year at Manchester City after making one of the most expensive transfer moves in Premier League history. Those issues have made their way into his international form as well, as he has struggled for England in Euro 2016.
But the former Golden Boy received a surprising motivational speech from his future club manager Pep Guardiola, gave him a phone call this past week in an effort to boost his confidence.
According to the Mirror, Guardiola called Sterling to assure him that he considers the 21-year-old midfielder “central to his plans” for Man City when he takes over the club later this summer.
A source for the Mirror described as ‘close’ to Sterling said that Guardiola assured him that he is a part of the future plan at the Etihad:
“Pep told him that as long as he works hard then he will fight for him.
“He told Raheem to keep his head up, not to worry. He knows he’s a very good player and a major part of his plans for Manchester City.”
Man City paid £49 million to acquire Sterling from Liverpool last summer, but the immediate return was six goals in the Premier League – half of which came in a hat-trick performance against Bournemouth.
In total, Sterling recorded 11 goals and four assists in 47 total appearances for Man City – including the Premier League, Champions League, League Cup and FA Cup.
