Bookmakers give top odds for open Premier League job to embattled USMNT manager

The Southampton managerial job is still vacant more than a week after Ronald Koeman left to take up the top job at Everton. Since the Saints have yet to indicate who will replace Koeman as the man in charge, oddsmakers have suggested that United States Men’s National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann is the most likely candidate for the job.

Per NBC Sports lead soccer writer Joe Prince-Wright, the sports book Sky Bet has given Klinsmann 1/3 odds of being named the new Southampton manager following the USMNT’s embarrassing defeat at the hands of Argentina in the Copa America Semi-Finals. The mark puts him well ahead of former Man City manager Manuel Pellegrini, who is second on the ranking with 11/4 odds.

Klinsmann has held the USMNT head coaching job since 2011, but has struggled to deliver titles to the United States since winning the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

At the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the U.S. team was eliminated in the knockout stage by Belgium. The following year they finished fourth in the Gold Cup and lost to Mexico in the CONCACAF Cup later that summer.

This past summer Klinsmann led the USMNT to the Copa America Centenario Semi-Finals after an upset win over Ecuador. However, they were beaten soundly in a 4-0 loss to Argentina.

Prior to managing the USMNT, Klinsmann coached Bayern Munich during the 2008-09, leading the Bundesliga giants to the Champions League quarter-finals in his one year at the helm.
