Iceland – a country of just over 330,000 citizens, with an estimated eight percent of its national population in France to watch the team compete in Euro 2016 – has advanced to the knockout round after a thrilling win over Austria and will face England in the Round of 16.
Going into the match, Iceland were in second place behind Hungary with two points but needed a win to guarantee their spot in the knockout round and avoid a potential tie-breaker from the third-place table.
After a 1-1 tie going into stoppage time, it was Arnor Ingvi Traustason who secured the win for Iceland in the 94th minute – and a spot in Euro 2016’s knockout round in the process.
England, who finished second in Group B, were slated to face whichever team finished second in Group F. Prior to the game-winning goal, that would have been Portugal.
