Cristiano Ronaldo has insisted that Wayne Rooney remains a key man for England and represents an ideal campaign for the Three Lions.
The Manchester United forward hasn’t enjoyed the best campaign at club level where, beyond the club’s troubles under Louis van Gaal, his form has been less than stellar.
Rooney was used both in attack and in midfield, and ended the campaign with just eight goals and six assists as the Red Devils won the FA Cup but failed to secure a return to the Champions League after missing out on the top four.
However, Rooney now has an opportunity to redeem an underwhelming campaign by leading England to glory at the European Championships in France this summer.
Speaking to the media—as per the Mirror—Ronaldo—who sparred with Rooney at the 2006 World Cup, despite being teammates at Old Trafford, has insisted that his former colleague remains vital to England’s hopes.
“A match against England would be very emotive for me,” Ronaldo began, entertaining the prospect of Portugal going up against the Three Lions this summer, “because of Wayne Rooney and because of many other things too.

“Roo is now a leader and that’s not a surprise,” he added. “I was always convinced that he would be a star for England and, inevitably, captain one day. It’s a perfect role for him after the era of Beckham and Terry.
“For me, the character and pride of Rooney is unique – he’s still very important for England.”
