Speaking on Ghanaian radio, Asamoah Gyan’s former mentor J.E. Sarpong has insisted that he’s not surprised Chelsea are keen on signing the forward.
Over the last week, the Blues have been heavily linked with a move for the striker, who is understood to be out of favour at Shanghai SIPG in the Chinese Super League.
While Antonio Conte is understood to be an admirer of the forward, and is keen on taking him to Stamford Bridge, the incoming Italian boss is aware that he may have to send a player to Shanghai in order to mitigate the forward’s hefty wage demands.
While some eyebrows have been raised with the news that the Pensioners are considering a swoop for the 30-year-old Gyan, the player’s former mentor Sarpong has insisted that he’s unsurprised to see the hitman back on the books of one of the Premier League’s giants.
“I am not surprised, Gyan have been one of the excellent players in Black Stars, to me he is one of the best strikers in Africa,” began Sarpong—who oversaw Gyan’s development at the Accra Academy—to Kasapa FM [as per Football Ghana].
