Not only did Cristiano Ronaldo win the Champions League with Real Madrid on Saturday, he also officially ended the campaign as the competition’s top scorer.
The Portuguese striker didn’t find the net during the final—at least not from open play—but ultimately made a decisive contribution as he scored the winning penalty during the shootout.
Real drew 1-1 with Atletico Madrid after Sergio Ramos’s opener was cancelled out by Yannick Carrasco’s late strike.
Ultimately, Juanfran missed his spot kick in the shootout, before Ronaldo hit the winner.
While the forward delivered something of an anonymous performance in the final, he still ended the campaign with a truly phenomenal 16 goals.
Astonishingly, this takes him seven goals of Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski in second place—the Pole finished the tournament with nine goals—while Luis Suarez and Thomas Muller finished the year in joint third, on eight goals each.
Antoine Griezmann could have joined them on eight goals, but ends the campaign with seven after sending a second-half penalty rattling against the crossbar in the Milan final.

Had Ronaldo found the net in the final, he would have equalled his own record for goals in a single Champions League campaign.
That came back in the 2013-14 season, when he scored 17 as Real clinched their tenth UCL crown.
