Louis van Gaal returns to Manchester United training ground with lawyer in tow

during the Barclays Premier League match between Manchester United and Newcastle United at Old Trafford on August 22, 2015 in Manchester, England.

On-going Sky Sports reports have confirmed that Paul Gilroy QC is present at Manchester United’s training complex along with Louis van Gaal.

The Dutch tactician led the club to the FA Cup on Saturday, but speculation swiftly followed that Jose Mourinho would be replacing him at Old Trafford.

According to BBC Sport, the former Chelsea boss and his agent, Jorge Mendes, are expected to hold talks with the United hierarchy this week, with a view of appointing him their next manager.

Van Gaal, who had reportedly been set for a holiday to Portugal, returned to Carrington on Monday morning, and was shortly followed by Gilroy.

As noted by Sky Sports, he has previously worked with a string of high-profile former players and coaches, but more notably, he also dealt with David Moyes’ departure from United in 2014.

In turn, it will only add fuel to the fire regarding speculation that Van Gaal is in fact negotiating a possible severance package with United, and will be leaving the club in the coming days.

Nevertheless, there has yet to be any official confirmation from the club regarding talks with either the former Dutch national team coach or Mourinho, although it appears as though much is happening behind the scenes.

United missed out on the Champions League this season after finishing fifth in the Premier League, and it doesn’t look as though the FA Cup will be enough to save Van Gaal.

The 64-year-old arrived in Manchester in 2014, but has faced continued scrutiny and criticism over his team’s style of play as well as for their inability to meet expectations.
