John Terry’s Chelsea career appears to be over, after he picked up his second red card of the season – his sixth Premier League dismissal of all time.
The Blues captain’s sending off at Sunderland on Saturday sees him pick up a two-game suspension, which rules him out of Chelsea’s remaining fixtures against Liverpool and Leicester City.
And, with no contract offer on the table according to Metro, it looks like JT will be moving on this summer. Therefore, we should probably refer to him as an ex-Chelsea skipper!
His time at Stamford Bridge has been fruitful. After all, he’s won four Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups, the 2012 Champions League and the 2013 Europa League.
However, Terry’s career has not been all raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens.
So, let’s remind ourselves of some memorable John Terry mess-ups.
Red cards
Terry hasn’t always played by the rules. In addition to his six Premier League red cards, he was sent off in the 2012 Champions League semi-final for an unprovoked off-the-ball attack on Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez.
That red card left Chelsea up against it in Barcelona, but they somehow managed to scrape through to the final, where their success on penalty kicks was again no thanks to their absent skipper.
Sarcastic racism
Terry’s gob has done much worse than his hacking legs and nasty knees, you know.
“F*ck off, f*ck off … f*cking black c*nt, f*cking knobhead”, is what Terry shouted at Anton Ferdinand during a match with QPR in 2011, according to The Guardian.
Terry’s defence, which failed to see him escape a four-game ban, was that he uttered the offensive slur “sarcastically”.
Own goals
Terry is one of the Premier League’s most prolific defenders when it comes to scoring, but he’s poked home a few too many at the wrong end in recent years.
In the past three seasons, JT has scored three OGs, including this clumsy contribution for Everton.
Extreme infidelity
Scoring against your own team is forgivable. It can be done accidentally.
But scoring with your teammate’s other half – even former missus – is on another level.
Terry committed this moral crime when he cheated on his wife with the former fiancee of Wayne Bridge.
The Daily Mail even reported that Terry got Vanessa Perroncel – who has a child with Bridge – pregnant and paid for an abortion.
Karma?
Terry was the victim of his own reckless bravery on this occasion, as Arsenal’s Abou Diaby volleyed his head.
Don’t cry!
