Apparently Liverpool missed out on an opportunity to grab a very solid winger who would have played for literally nothing. Andre Ayew, who was a star for Marseille in the 2014-15 season, tried to convince the Reds to sign him but was ultimately turned down.
According to Squawka via the Daily Mail, Ayew – a Liverpool fan in his youth – offered to play for the team for free for half a season until he proved he was good enough to earn a permanent starting job. Ayew’s agent Mark McKay confirmed that his client was interested in playing for Liverpool but ultimately moved on when the Reds declined to pick him up.
“It has always been Andre’s dream to play for Liverpool but unfortunately they opted to pursue other targets at the time,” McKay said previously.
Liverpool ultimately signed Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke while Ayew signed for Swansea City.
Ayew has 10 goals for the Swans this year and scored another 10 last year for Marseille in Ligue 1 prior to his move to the Premier League. Since making his senior debut in the 2007-08 season, he has 59 league goals in 237 appearances.
Benteke, meanwhile, has eight goals this year – his lowest ever total in the Premier League.
