Chelsea may not have the same reputation for liberal spending as Man United, Liverpool or Man City, but they still have more than enough money to land any player they set their sights on. Though it has been a while since the Blues made a mega-transfer deal for a player, Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos appears to be the one player the team decides to throw caution to the wind in order to sign.
According to Don Balon, Chelsea are preparing a bid of £63.5 million for Ramos – a number which would shatter the previous record of £59.7 million that Man United paid for Angel Di Maria in 2014. The durable Ramos has played 471 games for Real Madrid over the last 11 seasons, averaging over 43 games per year for the La Liga giants. He has been named the La Liga defender of the year for four straight seasons.
The 30-year-old defender is still one of the best at his position in all of Europe and could be plugged in to John Terry’s position once the Blues captain leaves at the end of the season. He could also serve as a replacement for Branislav Ivanovic.
The largest transfer fee Chelsea ever paid was £50 million to Liverpool for Fernando Torres in 2011.
