Even a golden opportunity against 17th-place Norwich City was not enough for Rafa Benitez to get his first win as manager of Newcastle United. With the team now a full six points deep in the relegation zone, the former Chelsea and Liverpool manager is changing tactics quickly in order to try and save the club (and perhaps his reputation as a manger) from the dreaded drop.
According to Chronicle Live, Benitez ordered all staff and players to resume training sessions the very day after losing in 3-2 to Norwich City. The move comes after Benitez reportedly cancelled the team’s days off following his hiring to the 19th-place club.
Newcastle will take on Southampton this Saturday, who are coming off a bitter 1-0 defeat to Leicester City, in what may be their last chance at a realistic chance to stave off relegation.
“It is more difficult but we have to keep confident that we can still do it,” Benitez said.
“We have seven games to go and we have to keep pushing.
“If we start winning games we still have time.”
Benitez might become a Leicester City fan himself as the Foxes take on 18th-placed Sunderland. Norwich City, meanwhile, will be playing against 16th-place Crystal Palace.
