Video: Brazil 2-2 Uruguay: Match Report & Highlights as Selecao crumble after Cavani, Suarez barrage

Luis Suarez

Brazil missed the chance to move above Uruguay in CONMEBOL World Cup qualification when they could only manage to draw 2-2 at home with La Celeste.

Goals from Douglas Costa and Renato Augusto gave the Selecao a comfortable lead inside the first half an hour, but Edinson Cavani pulled a goal back just after the half-hour mark and Luis Suarez scored moments after half time to draw the two sides level, marking his first match back after the 2014 World Cup with a fine effort.

The draw leaves Brazil in third place in the South American qualifying pool, two points behind their opponents who are second on 10 points. Leaders Ecuador have won four of their opening five matches, and top the pile on 13 points.

Uruguay’s defence were torn apart inside the first minute, when Willian’s tempting cross was turned in at the back post by Bayern Munich’s Douglas Costa.

The visitors stabilised, but fell behind again in the 26th when Augusto profited from a mistake by Alvaro Pereira and finished calmly after rounding goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.

It was a different story in the 32nd minute, as poor defending allowed Cavani to pull one back, before Suarez added an equaliser just after the break when he finished smartly from a tight angle.
