In 2012, Sheffield United and Wales striker Ched Evans was convicted of raping a teenage girl in a hotel room and sentenced to five years in prison. He served part of the sentence before getting out early and has been looking for a football team to take him on ever since. Despite not having a club to call home, Evans apparently believes he will get another chance to play football and earn a call up to the Wales national team ahead of Euro 2016.
According to the Sun, a source close to Evans stated that his people are confident that he will be signed with a club – possibly Sheffield United – before the end of the 2015-16 season and is not ruling out the possibility of earning a call up from Chris Coleman’s side when Wales takes on England to start Euro 2016.
‘Ched has been told that (Sheffield) United will come in for him if he is cleared,’ the source said.
‘He could be pulling his boots on in a few weeks. He has kept himself fit but hasn’t played competitive football for several years so he’ll take a while to get match fit.
‘Euro 2016 might be a stretch but who knows? His dream is to play for Wales against England in the tournament. That would be a fairy-tale ending to a nightmare few years.’
Even if his confidence is misplaced, Evans’ talent as a striker is hard to deny. The former Man City and Norwich City man scored 35 goals in all competitions for Sheffield Wednesday back in the 2011-12 season prior to his rape conviction.
