Manchester United are lining up a £40m bid for Toni Kroos after making the Real Madrid midfielder a top summer transfer target, according to the Daily Star.
The Daily Star reports that the Red Devils tried to sign Kroos from Bayern Munich in 2014 before he chose to join Real, for whom he has made 86 appearances.
Now United will make a fresh attempt to sign the World Cup winner, who has already spoken to German pal Bastian Schweinsteiger about linking up at Old Trafford, the Daily Star claims.
Although they might have some difficulty striking a deal, because the Daily Star understands that Madrid are still angry with United over the breakdown of David de Gea’s transfer.
A source told the Daily Star: “United want him and he’s one of their main targets when the transfer window opens. Real are reluctant to do business with United, but with Kroos the situation is different because he hasn’t settled and could be surplus to requirements.”
United have no shortage of options in Kroos’s central midfield position- Morgan Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick and Schweinsteiger.
But the 26-year-old would undoubtedly bring improved quality to the United team, and could act as a replacement for Carrick, whose contract expires in the summer.
