Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has insisted that the Blues must reach a final in order to salvage what has been a miserable campaign for the west Londoners.
A year ago, the Pensioners were cruising towards the Premier League title and looked imperious on their march to the championship.
However, the 2015-16 season has been much less kind to Chelsea, and they endured a horror start to the campaign before Jose Mourinho was dismissed in December.
The club have enjoyed an upturn of fortunes under Guus Hiddink—who remains unbeaten during his second stint at Stamford Bridge—and while they have had too many draws and remain in the bottom half of the table, there have been signs of improvement.
Similarly, the belief appears to steadily be returning to the reigning champions, who demonstrated their resiliency with late equalisers against both Everton and Manchester United.
While a top-four finish may be beyond Chelsea, Courtois has insisted that the season may not be a complete write-off, and that the Blues can still salvage their campaign with a cup final appearance.
Speaking to the club’s website, ahead of upcoming Champions League and FA Cup bouts against Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City, Courtois has outlined his ambitions for the rest of the campaign.
“We’ve had too many draws to climb the table,” the goalkeeper began. “In other games, like against Watford and West Brom, we should have won, so it’s a pity because we could have maybe been ninth or eighth but we are where we are.

“The Newcastle game next week is a very important one where we have to get the three points. We’ve had too many draws at Stamford Bridge and the supporters deserve a victory.
“After that we play in the Champions League and FA Cup against two great sides (Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City) and we have to try to win those games because the only way to save our season is to reach the final in one or both of them.”
