LA Galaxy sign former Man City ace to retirement home-style ranks

Once again, the MLS outfit LA Galaxy are adding more 30-plus players well past their prime to their roster. This time, they’ve added former Manchester City and AC Milan defensive midfielder Nigel de Jong to their football retirement home.

The southern California football club announced on their Twitter page and official website that they had acquired the 31-year-old Netherlands star on a free transfer as part of a deal with AC Milan to terminate his contract with the Serie A giants.

LA Galaxy head coach and General Manager Bruce Arena expressed confidence in De Jong as a strong contributing player to the club.

“Nigel is an experienced midfielder who will help the players around him get better,” Arena said in a statement from the club. “He will add qualities on the field that can strengthen our team in all areas. We look forward to Nigel coming to Los Angeles and joining our club.”

De Jong made over 100 appearances for Man City from January 2009 to 2012, winning the FA Cup and Premier League during his tenure in England. He has also been featured extensively for the Netherlands national team, earning starts in each of the last two World Cup competitions.

The Dutch superstar joins Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard (35), ex-Spurs striker Robbie Keane (35), and former Arsenal & Chelsea defender Ashley Cole (35) as prized additions to the club.
