Liverpool hope to sign Leicester City wonderkid for just £4m as Klopp looks to grow English core

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is reportedly considering lodging a bid for highly-rated Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell.

Left-back Chilwell is currently on loan at Championship side Huddersfield Town, having joined the Terriers on a short-term deal in November.

The 19-year-old, who has represented England at U18, U19 and U20 level, made his senior Leicester debut in October, playing the full 120 minutes as the Foxes drew 1-1 at Hull City after extra time in the Capital One Cup. Leicester lost the tie in a penalty shootout.

That game in October was Chilwell’s first ever senior appearance in English football, but he has been known to scouts from the big clubs for some time.

The Telegraph claim that Arsenal had a £3.5m bid for Chilwell rejected in the summer. The same newspaper reports that Liverpool’s imminent bid is likely to be worth £4m.

Bringing Chilwell to Anfield would be in line with Liverpool’s recent transfer policy, which has seen the Reds build a strong core of English players.

Cameron Brannigan, Nathaniel Clyne, Joe Gomez, Jordan Henderson, Jordon Ibe, Danny Ings, Adam Lallana, James Milner, Connor Randall, Jordan Rossiter and Daniel Sturridge have all represented the Reds in senior games this season, while Jerome Sinclair is also on the fringes of the first team.
