Manuel Pellegrini could be wearing a different shade of “Blue” next season if Manchester City fail to catch up to Arsenal and Leicester City in the Premier League or get far enough in the Champions League. The Man City boss has been on the hot seat for a while now, and the club’s recent tumble to third place behind the aforementioned clubs could result in his dismissal at the end of the year. However, he won’t be unemployed long if Chelsea have anything to say about it.
According to the Metro, Chelsea have targeted Pellegrini as their permanent manager candidate to replace former club boss Jose Mourinho and interim manager Guus Hiddink. Per Marca, the Blues plan to bring in Pellegrini instead of potentially emptying the vault for impending free agent manager Pep Guardiola from Bayern Munich.
Pellegrini led Man City to the League Cup and Premier League titles in the 2013-14 season – his first year at the helm – but the team stumbled the following year and finished second in the Premier League behind Chelsea.
Chelsea fired manager Jose Mourinho after claiming just 15 points in their first 16 matches and earning early elimination in the League Cup tournament. Shortly after he was dismissed, Guus Hiddink was hired as his replacement.
