David Silva had given the hosts the lead with an impressive finish, but City’s poor defence was their undoing again as Monchengladbach countered with purpose and were able to produce openings on countless occasions.
Julian Korb levelled matters just minutes after Silva had opened the scoring, and Manuel Pellegrini’s saw his side fall behind just before half time as Raffael diverted an effort beyond the hapless Joe Hart and into the back of the net.
With Vincent Kompany still missing through injury, Nicolas Otamendi and Eliaquim Mangala were tasked with keeping things tight at the back on Tuesday night, but yet again the duo failed miserably.
Despite the presence of Yaya Toure in midfield, City look vulnerable at the back and it continues to be their downfall as they had hoped to produce a reaction after their disappointing loss to Stoke City at the weekend.
In contrast, the visitors deserve plenty of credit for their football as they looked dangerous in every attack as they continue to play with confidence and sharpness.
As a result, Pellegrini will be left searching for answers again as he looks to plot a way back into the game. City know that a win coupled with a Juventus loss at Sevilla would allow them to leapfrog the Italian champions into top spot in the group.
However, while they trail at the Etihad, Juve are currently holding onto a goalless draw in Seville which suggests that Pellegrini’s men will have to settle for second place.
