Acclaimed South America giants Corinthians have won the Brazilian Campeonato with three games to spare.
They assured themselves of the title in emphatic style on Sunday as they swept aside fourth-placed Sao Paulo in a 6-1 win.
“I confess that I never imagined we would reach this level” Corinthians coach Tite said after the game. “I was telling the players that we have not yet reached our peak, but today we hit the maximum”.
After the game the players were presented with the trophy in front of a capacity 65,000 Arena Corinthians stadium.
It was the sixth time the Sao Paulo-based side have won the title, adding to their previous triumphs in 1990, 1998, 1999, 2005, and 2011.
The title was well-deserved – they had the league’s best attack and most robust defence over the course of the 36 game campaign.
