Man United boss Louis van Gaal explains decision to sub Juan Mata at half-time during win over Everton

Man United manager Louis van Gaal has explained the reason behind his decision to haul off playmaker Juan Mata at half-time during his side’s 3-0 win away at Everton.

Spanish international Mata has been in good form this season and has started all nine of Man United’s Premier League fixtures, scoring three and providing three assists in the process, but clearly his display in the first-half on Saturday afternoon was not one that pleased van Gaal, who revealed why he benched the pint-sized attacker.

“That was tactical and I was very happy, I have congratulated him (Lingard) with a good performance in the second half.

“He didn’t lose any balls, one pass to Wayne Rooney maybe, but that is the only pass I can remember, and he did his defensive work very well so I am very pleased with his performance.” added Van Gaal according to quotes reported by the Daily Mirror.
