Arsenal 3-0 Manchester United: Gunners getting over their mental block in the big games?
Manchester United looked poor against Arsenal this weekend as they suffered a shock 3-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium, with Louis van Gaal clearly not trusting some of his players, while some look like they won’t be given many more chances if they keep playing this badly.
With that in mind, here’s a look at four realistic signings the Red Devils could make this January in an attempt to rebuild and have a squad truly capable of challenging for the Premier League title…
1) John Stones (Everton)
With Daley Blind unconvincing against Arsenal, it certainly looks like United were right to spend so much of the summer signing a new centre-back. John Stones is still available and is likely to be on Chelsea’s radar again this January, and United must also revive their interest in the highly talented England international.
2) Lucas Biglia (Lazio)
A superb midfielder, Lucas Biglia has been linked several times with a move to Old Trafford and may well be on their agenda again. With Bastian Schweinsteiger poor against Arsenal and Morgan Schneiderlin for some reason not trusted in the starting line up at the moment, a move for the Argentine makes sense and could be the box-to-box midfield destroyer the Reds need.
3) Jose Luis Gaya (Valencia)
United are clearly missing Luke Shaw at left-back, with both Matteo Darmian and Ashley Young poor there in his position since his injury. Valencia starlet Jose Luis Gaya is one of the best young defenders in Europe and could be a fine buy for that role, having been recently linked strongly with a move to United this winter.
4) Romelu Lukaku (Everton)
Finally, in a slightly more ambitious move, United should try again to sign Everton striker Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian is in superb form this term and would be a huge upgrade on the off-form Wayne Rooney, whilst also taking the pressure off youngster Anthony Martial. Although he’d be expensive, Lukaku would surely cost less than pie-in-the-sky targets like Thomas Muller and Neymar.
