It has been a two-way battle for the Ballon d’Or for far too long now as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been the two best players in the world by some distance, but here’s a look at six players who could challenge them before too long…
1) Neymar (Barcelona)
Well on his way to becoming Barcelona’s ideal replacement for Messi, Neymar is surely going to be a Ballon d’Or winner of the future after a superb start to his career.

2) Luis Suarez (Barcelona)
Another Barcelona star doing very well at the moment, Luis Suarez is in superbly prolific form and has that spark to his game to establish himself as the best in the world, though time may not be on his side in terms of challenging for the Ballon d’Or.
3) Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich)
The way Robert Lewandowski is playing at the moment, a potential legend looks like being born as the Bayern Munich star takes his game to a whole new level. With ten strikes in his last three matches, Lewandowski is truly scoring at Ronaldo and Messi-like rates.
4) Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich)
Another world class performer from Bayern, Thomas Muller has been a rising star for some time now and is surely set to become one of the greats of his generaiton if he carries on like this.
5) Eden Hazard (Chelsea)
Perhaps not at his best so far this season, but Chelsea forward Eden Hazard was the best player in the Premier League last year and has been tipped to become one of the next Galactico signings at Real Madrid. An ideal Ronaldo replacement, the Belgian can go very far in the game.
6) Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund)
An outsider perhaps, but Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus is another world class talent who would do well to move to a bigger club if he is to realise his full potential. With goals, assists and wonderful natural ability, the German could come close to matching Messi and Ronaldo in his impact.
