Memphis Depay backed to shine for Manchester United by former PSV manager

Dutch winger Memphis Depay has been backed to overcome his slow start at Manchester United by his former boss Phillip Cocu, Guardian Sport reports.

The 21-year-old completed his move to the Red Devils at the start of the summer from defending Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven, but is yet to open his account for his new club in the six Barclays Premier League appearances he has made.

Following a poor first-half display in the 3-1 victory over Liverpool at the weekend, the Holland international did not reappear after the interval because he was hauled off by manager Louis van Gaal in favour of Ashley Young, who went on to have an immediate impact on proceedings at Old Trafford.

Depay will be hoping he keeps his place in the starting XI for Tuesday night’s UEFA Champions League clash against his old side and Cocu insists it’s just a matter of time before the forward proves his quality for United:

“It’s normal you need some time to grow, you need a lot of games,” he said.

“Physically he’s very strong and he’s a quick learner also and I’m sure when he gets some time he’ll get it very fast. He will bring goals.”

“He’s a very vertical player who always likes to play towards the goal. Not only will he score goals, he has good vision.”

“He will have some ups and downs. I’m sure when he’s been playing a few months, I’m convinced he’ll get better and better,” Cocu added.
