Liverpool FC news: Five replacements for Brendan Rodgers, including controversial raid on rivals & ex-Chelsea duo

Five ideal replacements for struggling Rodgers at Liverpool.

With Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers facing an uncertain future after a dismal defeat to rivals Manchester United this weekend, here’s a look at five realistic candidates to replace the Northern Irishman if he leaves anytime soon…

1) Andre Villas-Boas (Zenit Saint Petersburg)

Set to leave Zenit Saint Petersburg at the end of the season, could Liverpool make an early move for former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas? The Portuguese tactician worked wonders at Porto and has also found success in Russia, though some doubts remain over his time in England, where he certainly flopped at Stamford Bridge and divided opinion at White Hart Lane.

2) Frank de Boer (Ajax)

A hugely promising young manager, Frank de Boer has won four Eredivisie titles in charge of Ajax and looks ready to move on to a bigger club. Linked with Liverpool in the past, the Dutchman seems a strong candidate to take over at Anfield if Rodgers is shown the door.

3) Roberto Martinez (Everton)

In what would be a hugely controversial move, could Liverpool go back in for one of their former targets Roberto Martinez? The Spaniard has done a magnificent job at Goodison Park and looks destined for a bigger club in the future. The Reds approached time while he was still at Wigan, and it wouldn’t be that surprising if they considered him, even if it would be a move the Everton fans would never forgive or forget due to the two clubs’ fierce local rivalry.

4) Jurgen Klopp (Unattached)

One of the best managers in Europe, Jurgen Klopp is currently without a club after leaving Borussia Dortmund and has recently hinted he’d be interested in the Liverpool job. The Merseyside giants have also shown an interest in the German tactician in the past, and as Rodgers struggles, this move looks more and more likely.

5) Carlo Ancelotti (Unattached)

A long shot perhaps, but former Real Madrid, Chelsea and AC Milan manager Carlo Ancelotti could be a great coup for Liverpool if they could pull it off. The three-time Champions League winner is currently without a club and although he may be more likely to go for a bigger name, the Reds may feel it’s worth a try for such a proven winner, who led Chelsea to the double in his first season in England.
